Morocco's King of Modernity

August 31, 2022 @ 18:28 Blog entry's cover image

Morocco's first polymer banknote was released in August 2019 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the enthronement of King Mohammed VI. The Bank Al-Maghrib clearly wanted to send a message to the rest of the world that Morocco was a modern, state-of-the-art country capable of constructing grand projects as a leader on the African continent.

Morocco changed during the reign of King Mohammed VI. His portrait can be found on the obverse of the note. By many Moroccans, he's considered the face of modernity and of a new Morocco. This modern style extends to the vertical design of the face. Like the polymer and vertical innovations, the more enduring iconography of Morocco's high-speed rail system decorates the reverse. Shown are a train and bridge. The achievements of King Mohammed V (motorway) bridge are a "way of celebrating engineering success and design superlative, with the longest cable-stayed bridge in all of Africa".  (Baker, 2022)  The bridge spans the valley of the Bouregreg River near Rabat. It has "two 200-meter high arched towers, which symbolize the new doors to the cities of Rabat and Salé." ("Mohammed VI Bridge - Wikipedia", 2022) The rail line, from Tangier to Casablanca, is the first of its kind in Africa.
