General information: Ch.7 (=Chapa 7, translated "Plate No.7" which means this is the 7th issue of a note denomination of 20$00 Escudos).

The banknote was originated and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Ltd. (England), printed on paper manufactured by Portals (England). The production of the note was tendered and other parties to participate in the tender, but did not win, were Joh. Enschedé (Printing, Netherlands) and Arjomari (Paper, France).

Designed by João de Sousa Araújo (full name: João José Gramunha Vasques Cantos de Sousa Araújo, born 1929), who joined the Bank of Portugal in 1950 and took over a leading role in designing the portuguese banknotes since 1965 (including notes dated 1964), until he left the Bank of Portugal in 1983.

João de Sousa Araújo revolutionised the design of banknotes, changing the procedures adopted by the Bank of Portugal until then. He began to re-draw the initial mock-ups, giving indications of the elements on the banknote and their location.
He produced the initial mock-ups of all the banknotes issued by Banco de Portugal between 1965 and 1981, making a total of thirteen mock-ups. These mock-ups were made based on the iconographic elements chosen by the Banknote Service's technical office and the Board of Directors. João de Sousa Araújo's initial maquettes are based on compositions made from cut-outs of printed and photocopied images, most of which are not drawn.

Obverse Description:

Santo Antonio (Saint Anthony of Lisbon (1190-1231), couplets and a central ornament symbolising the famous sermon to the Fishes printed using calcographic printing, and various decorative elements using the guilloche technique.

The engraving of St Anthony of Lisbon was made according to a detail taken from the painting "St Anthony and the Child" by Friar Charles, 16th century, which is in the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon.
