Designed by Andrzej Heidrich, engraved by Boguslaw Brandt.

Notes until 1990 have the inscription "Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa" (Polish People's Republic), which existed from 1947- Dec. 29, 1989, and/or "Narodowy Bank Polski. Later notes have the inscription "Rzeczpospolita Polska" (Polish republic, 1989-today) and "Narodowy Bank Polski".

After ongoing hyperinflation in the early 1990s, the Polish Zloty (PLZ) was replaced by the New Polish Zloty (PLN) at a rate of 10000 to 1 as of Jan. 1, 1995. The PLZ notes were withdrawn from circulation on Dec. 31, 1996 and could be exchanged at NBP until Dec. 31, 2010 (=demonetized).

In April 2015, the NBP issued a numismatic product (23000 collector albums), containing all 23 different denominations of the banknotes issued between 1974-1993. Obverse Description:

Mikołaj Kopernik, english: Nicolaus Copernicus; Middle Low German: Niclas Koppernigk, modern: Nikolaus Kopernikus; (1473–1543), born in Toruń/Poland, was a Renaissance polymath, active as a mathematician, astronomer, and Catholic canon, who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than Earth at its center. In all likelihood, Copernicus developed his model independently of Aristarchus of Samos, an ancient Greek astronomer who had formulated such a model some eighteen centuries earlier.
